Winch history

One of the earliest literary reference to a winch is to be found in the writings of Herodotus of Halicarnassus reporting the Persian Wars, He tells how wooden winches were used to tighten the cables for a pontoon bridge across the Hellespont in 480 B.C. By the 4th century BC, regarded by Aristotle as common for architectural use, winch and pulley hoists were commonly used.
